Football: Zidane begins new Madrid era by dropping goalkeeper Courtois

MADRID (AFP) - Zinedine Zidane restored old favourites for his first game since being re-appointed coach of Real Madrid as Thibaut Courtois was dropped for Keylor Navas while Isco and Marcelo both returned.
Gareth Bale was also named in the starting line-up at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday as Madrid launched their new era under Zidane at home to Celta Vigo in La Liga.
Courtois was the biggest surprise, given he was bought by Madrid for around €40 million (S$60 million) last summer and had established himself ahead of Navas under Santiago Solari.
But Navas was a key figure under Zidane, who had tried to dissuade the club from signing another goalkeeper while he was in charge.
Isco's recall was another show of intent given the Spaniard had not started a single league game under Solari, while Marcelo came back too, having lost his place at left-back to promising 22-year-old Sergio Reguilon.
Bale's selection suggests Zidane is at least prepared to offer the Welshman a chance to stake his claim.
Zidane lost faith in Bale last season, with the pair's relationship growing increasingly strained before Zidane announced his departure.
Madrid lie 12 points adrift of leaders Barcelona, who play away at Real Betis on Sunday.

Ronaldo could face ex-team United in ICC S'pore

Ronaldo could face ex-team United in ICC S'pore
In the space of nine months, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo could be set for his third reunion with his former club Manchester United.
After their Champions League meetings late last year, the latest encounter could take place when the International Champions Cup (ICC) swings by Singapore in July.
This year's ICC in Singapore is set to take place at the National Stadium over the July 19-21 weekend and will feature four teams - one more than in the last two years - and two games instead of the previous three.
Sources tell The Straits Times that Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are all but confirmed for the visit. United will play two games in Perth on July 13 and 17 first, while Spurs will announce their tour of Asia next week.
When ST was at White Hart Lane last month, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said: "We are looking to try... It is an option we like a lot and we would love to go. I think the percentage is high to be (in Asia) and meet you there."
It is understood that negotiations are ongoing to add Italy's Juventus and Inter Milan to the line-up.
The first edition in 2017 saw Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Inter play at the National Stadium. Last year, it was Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.
Although the fixtures will only be confirmed on March 27, the new arrangement means the four teams do not need to take a break between matches and the weekend scheduling should attract more fans to the National Stadium.
Alan Chua, a 35-year-old businessman who supports United and idolises Ronaldo, said: "I went to watch United beat a Singapore selection side 8-1 at the old National Stadium as a teenager in 2001.
"It would be a dream come true if both the Red Devils and Ronaldo come back this year."
While Ronaldo has never played here, he visited in 2013 and 2017. Tottenham were last here in 1995, when Singapore beat them 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Juventus beat a Singapore selection side 5-0 in the first football match held at the new National Stadium in 2014.
James Walton, sports business group leader at Deloitte Singapore and South-east Asia, said: "Realistically, the two EPL clubs that can really sell out the National Stadium are Manchester United and Liverpool. United would be far and away the biggest draw and a real coup for the ICC if they can get them here.
"The ICC format varies from location to location. Having four teams instead of three, with some of the names on the table, is quite interesting. In previous years, there was always one game with a slightly weaker attendance, and it is usually the one without an EPL team.
"Hopefully, if we can have an exciting EPL team in each game, I believe both games will see significant attendances. One fewer game need not be a bad thing."
A spokesman for organisers Relevent could only confirm that the ICC matches here will take place in July and more information will be announced next month.

Game of many returns for Gunners

Game of many returns for Gunners

LONDON • Arsenal manager Unai Emery will face a familiar foe when the Gunners look to move a step closer to Europa League glory at Rennes today.
French midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa endured an unhappy two years under Emery at Paris Saint-Germain where he was frozen out for an entire season and made to train with the club's reserves.
However, his mercurial talent has now helped Ligue 1 side Rennes reach the last 16 of an European competition for the first time.
At 31, Ben Arfa has relaunched his career in the more modest surroundings of Roazhon Park and will aim to inflict revenge upon Emery today.
Rennes may lie 10th in Ligue 1, but shocked a highly fancied Real Betis in the last 32 with a thrilling 6-4 aggregate win.
"We know it'll be a level up against such a club," said Rennes midfielder Benjamin Andre.
"Arsenal is a name that resonates throughout Europe. They will obviously be the big favourites."

Arsenal's struggles on the road in Emery's first season in charge should give the French side reason to believe. The Gunners have won just once away from home since November, suffering an embarrassing 1-0 defeat by Bate Borisov in the last 32 before turning the tie around at the Emirates.

French international Alexandre Lacazette will miss out on a return to his homeland as he is suspended, but there will be a homecoming of another sort for Petr Cech, who spent two years at Rennes before joining Chelsea in 2004.
The Blues, meanwhile, are aiming to win the competition for a second time in six years starting against Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge, with Maurizio Sarri having seemingly bounced back from the brink of losing his job.
London derby victories over Tottenham and Fulham have given the Italian breathing space after a 6-0 Premier League thrashing by Manchester City and then seeing his authority questioned by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga's refusal to be substituted in the League Cup final.
Sarri's fate, though, will likely depend on sealing a return to Champions League football next season and winning the Europa League may yet prove the best means to that end with Tottenham, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea fighting for the final two places in the Premier League's top four.
Off the pitch, Fifa confirmed on Tuesday that Chelsea have appealed against a transfer ban imposed after they were found guilty of breaching rules on recruiting 29 foreign players under the age of 18.
The Blues, banned from the next two transfer windows and also fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$810,850), had already said they would appeal against the decision taken by Fifa's disciplinary committee last month.
Fifa said in a statement that it could neither offer a schedule for the process, nor whether the ban would be lifted pending the hearing.

Football: Arsenal inflict first domestic defeat on Solskjaer to surge into top four

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blamed Manchester United's lack of ruthlessness as the Norwegian suffered his first domestic defeat as caretaker manager in a 2-0 loss at Arsenal on Sunday (March 10).
Granit Xhaka's early strike and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang's penalty 21 minutes from time saw Gunners leapfrog United into the Premier League top four.
Unai Emery's men also close to within just a point of third-placed Tottenham and now hold the upper hand in the race for Champions League qualification.
Arsenal do not face any of the top six in their remaining eight league games, whilst United host title-chasing Manchester City and Chelsea in the coming weeks on top of their Champions League and FA Cup commitments.
"You have to be disappointed with the result, but the performance was a good one," said Solskjaer.
"The first goal always dictates how the game goes. We created chances, big chances, hit the woodwork twice, (Bernd) Leno played well.
"In terms of what you can control, we shouldn't be too disappointed."
European trips to France for both sides in midweek produced vastly contrasting results as United shocked free-spending Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The Gunners on the other hand went down 3-1 to Rennes to give themselves a mountain to climb in Thursday's second leg to reach the last eight of the Europa League.
Emery made five changes from that side and was rewarded with a vital victory.
"We are going to play difficult matches and being consistent is very important," said Emery.
"At the moment I think we are playing consistently, but we need to be calm and patient."

DE GEA NOT DISTRACTED

After a bright start, Arsenal were nearly hit with a sucker punch when with United's first attack, Romelu Lukaku turned Luke Shaw's cross onto the crossbar for the first of a series of wasted chances for the Belgian striker.
However, at the other end it was the normally flawless David de Gea who was at fault for the opener as the Spaniard failed to read the swerve on Xhaka's long-range strike 12 minutes in.

Solskjaer, though, rejected suggestions ongoing contract talks over a new deal for the United goalkeeper has effected his concentration.
"David's really focused and concentrated, he's too professional to let his mind wander," insisted Solskjaer.
United seemed to feel the after-effects of their heroics in Paris early on, but soon clicked into gear to look more like the side that had suffered just one defeat in Solskjaer's first 17 games in charge.
Fred's curling effort from outside the box clipped the post before Lukaku tried to round Bernd Leno, but the Arsenal goalkeeper stood up well to block.
The German stopper had an unconvincing start to life as Arsenal number one, but has looked ever more assured in recent weeks and made another huge save to deny Lukaku once more from close range six minutes into the second-half.
United were utterly dominant for the first 20 minutes of the second period, but to Solskjaer's frustration conceded a penalty when Alexandre Lacazette charged into the area and hit the floor under minimal contact from Fred.
"I don't think there is enough contact to warrant the penalty," said Solskjaer, while even Emery categorised the award as "soft."
Aubameyang missed a last-minute penalty to win the north London derby against Tottenham last weekend, but made no mistake to leave the visitors a mountain to climb.
"I knew it would be tough, but I was really confident," said the Gabon international.
Solskjaer's time at United as a player and over the past three months as boss has been littered with late drama, none more so than at PSG on Wednesday.
That was a Champions League night that will live long in the memory, but there was no turnaround this time to leave the Red Devils with plenty of work to do just to qualify for the competition next season.

Football: Deeney and Deulofeu seal Watford win at West Ham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Watford brought West Ham United's streak of Premier League success to an abrupt halt with a surprise 2-0 win at the London Stadium on Saturday (Dec 22) thanks to a first-half Troy Deeney penalty and a late Gerard Deulofeu clincher.
Deeney tucked home his third goal of the season on the half-hour from the spot after Fabian Balbuena had bundled over Roberto Pereyra, the defender injuring himself so badly that he had to leave the field.
The goal came during end-to-end fare as the Hammers had begun to take control in search of a fifth successive league victory.
Lukasz Fabianski had saved his last three penalties but could do nothing to stop Deeney putting the visitors ahead, although the Polish goalkeeper did make a magnificent stop after the break to deny Abdoulaye Doucoure.
West Ham did most of the pressing, though, with Michail Antonio twice heading against the post after the break and Javier Hernandez squandering excellent chances before Deulofeu sealed victory three minutes from time with a sharp finish.
The Spaniard's goal secured Watford their first away win for over two months and lifted them, temporarily at least, into the top six, three points clear of the Hammers.
Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster again needed to be in fine form to thwart the home side.
"We deserved a little bit more, I think, at least to draw the game," said West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini.
"Going a goal behind made it more difficult in that we were playing under pressure. We had three or four clear chances to at least draw the game.
"The penalty gave Watford that impetus. Before the goal we had three very dangerous opportunities and dominated. Once they scored, they were calm while we were more nervous."
Watford manager Javi Gracia was not about to get too giddy about his side's elevated position in the table.
"We have a lot of games so we don't have time to speak about our position. We are improving. We started playing well with four wins, after that we have competed well with good and bad results," said the Spaniard.
"At the end of the game today, we got the result we deserved. It was an open game but we deserved the victory."
Foster, inevitably, came in for special praise. "The keeper always has a good performance and he gives confidence to the rest of the team," said Garcia.

PORTO • For Portugal, success begets success, forging an "almost indestructible family" mentality.
So long the nearly men on the international stage, their Euro 2016 triumph - the country's first title - was a culmination of a golden period during which they have also reached the Euro 2004 final, the 2006 World Cup semi-finals and the last four at Euro 2012.
And after clinching the inaugural Nations League with a 1-0 win over the Dutch in Porto last Sunday, Portugal have every intention of continuing their winning momentum - starting with the defence of their European Championship title.
Long-serving manager Fernando Santos, who has been at the helm since 2014, said: "Sometimes, things are not perfect, but that is not for lack of effort. For the last five years, we know what we are capable of doing. We are always candidates to win the competitions we take part in."
He made two key chances for the final, introducing Danilo Pereira instead of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves to give added protection to his team's backline, while replacing burgeoning talent Joao Felix with Goncalo Guedes.
Both moves paid off as Valencia forward Guedes scored the winner and Porto enforcer Danilo subdued Barcelona-bound Frenkie de Jong, the key midfield cog for the Dutch.
Santos said his team must not stop evolving if they are to lift more silverware. He added: "The future is here and now, right outside the door. If we look back to 2016, some of those players are no longer here - this is an ongoing process."
New blood like Benfica forward Felix - one of Europe's hottest talents - have already been given their first taste of international football while there is a talented supporting cast led by Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, who picked up the Player of the Tournament award.
Portugal's undisputed star Cristiano Ronaldo, 34, however, said he had no plans to retire as he still had the "same enthusiasm" from when he won his first cap at 18.
Despite being a peripheral presence in the final, the Juventus forward still had an impressive tournament after his hat-trick in the semi-final against Switzerland.
He told Portuguese TV channel RTP: "As long as I have the strength and motivation, I will continue to represent the colours of Portugal. When I am with the national team, I feel like at home."
