Tite defends Brazil's poor display against Panama

Tite defends Brazil's poor display against Panama
PORTO • Brazil coach Tite has defended the 1-1 friendly draw with Panama as "normal" despite the national team producing one of their most insipid displays in recent memory.
Prior to Saturday's meeting at Porto's Dragao Stadium on Saturday, the 76th-ranked Central American minnows had never scored against their opponents before, losing all four previous meetings and conceding 16 goals in the process.
Many had expected more of the same from Tite's third-ranked team.
But, despite enjoying 78 per cent of the ball and twice hitting the woodwork through Richarlison and Casemiro, they could not find the second goal following Lucas Paqueta's first international strike.
Star forward Neymar, out with a fractured foot, watched the game from the stands, with Panama equalising through skipper Adolfo Machado's header from what looked like an offside position.
However, Tite felt that while the "performance was not brilliant, it was not below par either", claiming it was an experimental side even though there were big names on the field including Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.
The 57-year-old told reporters post-game: "What do we establish at this stage now? We gave young people opportunities.
"After half-time, there were some adjustments we made. At the interval, we were able to reorganise and we then went to a level of normality, but the first half was below expectations.
"Today, we had a defensive line with (Eder) Militao and (Alex) Telles. This is the stage we are in. When we go to the Copa America, then I make the best choices.
"My expectation was to be a bit more creative, but I also have to accept that the midfield is going to make errors.
"I have to make these modifications so that the game can have a creative process with the forwards.
"The supporters are there to listen, to understand, to be annoyed by the result. Normally that's the way it is.
"If I am a fan, I want to win against Panama. We have to understand the context, just as we have to understand the construction of the team."
The Selecao will next play another friendly against the Czech Republic tomorrow as they prepare to host this year's Copa America, which starts on June 14.

Football: Japan have no time to feel sorry for themselves, says captain Maya Yoshida after Asian Cup loss

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Japan captain Maya Yoshida says his side must learn from their painful Asian Cup final defeat and use the experience to make a breakthrough at the next World Cup by getting beyond the last 16 for the first time.
Japan had been looking for a fifth Asian title but were stunned 3-1 in the final by Qatar in the United Arab Emirates on Friday (Feb 1).
Invited to take part in the Copa America in June and July, and with their qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup set to begin in September, there is little time for Japan to reflect on their disappointment.
"Our first target is, of course, to qualify for the World Cup, and then get over the wall at which we were stopped last time, the round of 16. That is an objective for Japanese football," Yoshida said after the final.
"In order to do that, we have the Copa America coming up and then in the autumn the World Cup qualifiers, and we have to make sure we learn from this defeat.
"We have to capitalise upon this experience looking ahead to what comes next. Of course I'm disappointed, but we have to look forward."
Yoshida said he felt a sense of responsibility for the surprise defeat by Qatar, who will host the World Cup in 2022.
"For the first and second goals, we conceded from a player right in front of me, and I really feel a big sense of regret that I wasn't able to lead the team to the title," he added.
Both Japan and Qatar will compete in Brazil as invitees when the Copa America starts on June 14.
Japan is also building towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with coach Hajime Moriyasu saying in the past he was aiming to match or better Japan's bronze medal achieved in 1968.
Despite originally considering sending an Under-23 squad to Brazil in preparation for the Olympics, the Japanese Football Association announced in December it would be sending a full-strength squad.
Japan's next fixture is a friendly against Colombia on March 22.

Belgium coach hails Courtois for calm reaction to error

Belgium coach hails Courtois for calm reaction to error

BRUSSELS • Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has defended Thibaut Courtois following his error on Thursday, which led to an equaliser during the 3-1 win over Russia in their Euro 2020 Group I qualifier at Brussels' King Baudouin Stadium.
Captain Eden Hazard scored twice for Belgium to spare the blushes of his goalkeeper, who gifted Russia's Denis Cheryshev a soft goal when he failed to clear the ball in time.
"After that incident, you could see why Thibaut is the No. 1 in the world," Martinez said in a press conference after the match.
"He played as if nothing had happened and remained icy calm.
"Impressive, the way he reacted after his mistake. Credit to Russia for that counter goal. At times they put a lot of pressure, so we made the wrong decision at the time."
Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with his first international goal before Hazard netted his brace to clinch the three points for Belgium.
Martinez's men led as early as the 15th minute when Timothy Castagne's pass fed Tielemans on the edge of the box and, as Russia's defensive line opened up, the Leicester midfielder fired a low shot past goalkeeper Guilherme Marinato.
But their lead lasted barely a minute before Courtois made his error.
The Real Madrid custodian dallied in possession following a back-pass and, when pressed into action, he gave the ball straight to Cheryshev on the edge of the box and the winger, who scored four goals at last year's World Cup, finished into an empty net.
He was, however, unfazed and insisted after the match that such instances do not happen often for him.
"I don't think I've made many mistakes in my career, so if you make one, you're obviously not happy," said the 26-year-old .
"I am satisfied with the victory and also with the game I played after my foul. I remained calm, I am happy with that. There is no problem."
Striker Michy Batshuayi was asked by Martinez to lead the line in the absence of the injured Romelu Lukaku, while the Hazard brothers, Eden and Thorgan, played together for only the third time in a national team shirt.
"I enjoyed myself tonight. I take a lot of pleasure from this victory, in which I scored two goals," said skipper Hazard.
"After our last game against Switzerland (a 5-2 Nations League defeat), we had to respond in front of our own fans."

Real lose all in space of a week

Real lose all in space of a week

MADRID • Real Madrid have been European champions for 1,012 days, but their time is up.
On June 1, the 2019 Champions League final will be held just 14km away at the home of rivals Atletico but, for the first time after reaching and winning three straight finals, Los Blancos will not be there.
In one week at the Bernabeu they have been dumped out of the King's Cup, thrust 12 points off the pace in LaLiga, and exited the competition they made their own.
When the end came, it was brutal. But it was also brilliant. Ajax went to Madrid on Tuesday night and tore them to bits, winning 4-1 and 5-3 on aggregate in the last 16.
Their "s*** season", in Real defender Dani Carvajal's words, is now over in March.
But it is also true that Ajax were very good. Goals from Hakim Ziyech, David Neres, Dusan Tadic and Lasse Schone were the consequence of a collective superiority that was startling. They are deservedly through: too fast, too incisive, too well-organised against a team who are disintegrating, a generation that has come to a close.
"I have never had this feeling before," Carvajal said. "I don't know how to explain it. It's so bad. In a week we lost it all, we lost it all at home. Is it the end of an era? I don't see it like that but it is true the season is practically finished for us."

His coach Santiago Solari said afterwards "so much had happened", and he was right.
Real suffered three injuries, Lucas Vazquez and Vinicius Jr withdrawn within half an hour and Gareth Bale limping through the final minutes.
They also hit the post twice. Nacho was sent off in added time. And there was a five-minute wait for the video assistant referee to mistakenly allow Ajax's third goal, after the ball went out of play in the build-up to Tadic's strike.
Captain Sergio Ramos, whose defensive prowess might have made a difference, was suspended after intentionally getting booked in the first leg in hopes of having a clean slate in the quarter-finals. His decision must surely feel daft as he watched from the stands.
And yet sometimes for all the analysis, all the detail, there is a simple truth and that was the case here: Ajax were simply better than Real, much of it owing to a Zinedine Zidane-inspired Tadic.
The Serbian midfielder said he took inspiration from the Real legend, ironically, for what he described as the game of his life.
Ajax had lost 2-1 at home and knew they needed to score at least two but little did they know they would get the goals so soon.
In just 18 minutes, the 30-year-old Tadic laid on passes for Ziyech and Neres to give them a two-goal lead. He then capped a virtuoso display with a thunderous finish to make it 3-0 just after the hour.
Real were surprisingly passive; Ajax were aggressive, the precision at pace impressive, the mastery of space even more so.
"This is probably the best game of football I've ever played," Tadic said. "We beat the best club in the world. I think we made a lot of people happy tonight."

  • 9

Years since Real Madrid last failed to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. They are also the first reigning champions not to make the last eight since Chelsea in 2013.

  • 4-1

Real's loss was their biggest margin of defeat in a home knockout match in European competition.

Tadic, who joined the Dutch side last year after struggling for consistency in four years at English club Southampton, outshone Real's star midfield trio of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro.
"Zidane was always my favourite player. Maybe I was watching too many of his clips," he added.
Marco Asensio gave Real hope with an assured finish. But it lasted only two minutes, as Schone sent a bending free kick into the top corner to seal the win.
Solari insisted he would not resign even after Real failed to reach the competition's quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.
He was handed a contract until 2021 when he was appointed in November but the humiliating defeat means he may not last the season, let alone beyond the summer.
"I did not come to the club in such a difficult moment to give up," Solari said.
"These players were champions of Europe three years in a row, now they have been knocked out and it's a very sad moment which puts into perspective how difficult it is to win the European Cup."

Football: Unbeaten Brunei DPMM aim to continue momentum against Balestier Khalsa in Singapore Premier League

SINGAPORE - The early Singapore Premier League title talk had revolved around the usual suspects; defending champions Albirex Niigata, local powerhouses Home United and Tampines Rovers, as well as big spenders Hougang United.
But midway through the first round of fixtures, only overlooked Brunei DPMM remain unbeaten - even after tough games against Home (1-0), Albirex (0-0) and Tampines (2-1).
DPMM coach Adrian Pennock told The Straits Times: "Nobody were talking us pre-season but there can always be surprises in the league and Balestier (Khalsa, their opponents on Saturday, April 13, at the Bishan Stadium) are also third now on merit.
"They are good going forward and we need to show up if we are to get a positive result and keep this run going.
"Momentum is so important in a league season. Albirex had a fantastic unbeaten run throughout 2018 to win the league and hopefully ours will continue on Saturday."
Former Belarus international Andrei Varankou has started well with three goals as Pennock has successfully integrated him and the other two new imports - Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto and English centre-back Charlie Clough - alongside DPMM's long-serving locals.
Pennock, 48, took over on Dec 1. The Englishman said: "It is important we got the right people and characters in the team. The imports we got from 30 trialists from all over the world are excellent, and the locals have just been these honest players who want to learn.
"My job was first to get them fit, strong and organised and work on team spirit and bonding."
His side are tactically flexible (able to switch between three or four at the back) and also mentally resilient (DPMM played with 10 men for 40 minutes against Albirex after Najib Tarif was sent off).
Balestier will be no pushovers despite having lost their captain and goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam. He ruptured his Achilles' tendon and will be out for about four months.
Tigers coach Khidhir Khamis will have to rely on the untested duo of Zacharial Leong and Faris Danial during the Singapore international's absence.
Khidhir said: "Zaiful is an integral part of how we play and his absence is a big blow on and off the pitch, but we have a squad ready to take up the responsibility of leading and rallying each other until he returns."
Balestier have scored eight goals after five league games - behind only Tampines who have managed 12 - with forwards Sime Zuzul and Kristijan Krajcek a threat and 19-year-old Daniel Goh impressing on the right wing.
Khidhir said:"We had a short pre-season, so we are still a work in progress. But I have been pleased with the players' willingness to accept change from a soak and strike strategy to more expansive football.
"We still need to improve in terms of intensity and how we attack and defend. The players are responding in training and we will be a much better side as the season goes along."
