PARIS (AFP) - Gianluigi Buffon will leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer after it was agreed to not renew the former Italy captain's contract, the French champions announced on Wednesday (June 5).
"Following joint discussions, Paris Saint-Germain and Gianluigi Buffon have agreed to not renew the legendary goalkeeper's contract which expires on 30 June 2019," PSG said in a statement.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper, who won the World Cup in 2006 and is Italy's most-capped player with 176 appearances, did not say whether he would be retiring from the game after leaving the French capital.
He joined PSG last summer after ending a trophy-packed 17-year career at Italian giants Juventus and played 25 times in all competitions for PSG last season, winning the Ligue 1 title and the pre-season Champions Trophy.
"Today my adventure outside Italy comes to an end," Buffon said in a statement.
"Ernest Hemingway wrote that there are only two places in the world where people can live happily: at home and in Paris. Today onwards, this will also apply to me: Paris, in some way, will always remain my home."
This season's league title was the 10th of Buffon's career, adding to a bulging trophy cabinet that contains just about every honour in football.
However the Champions League has eluded him despite him spending the bulk of his career at Juve, one of Europe's biggest clubs, and it was hoped that he might break his duck with the Qatari-funded Parisians.
However despite winning the league at a canter, the past season was a poor one for both Buffon and a team with lofty ambitions on the European stage.
They missed out on both domestic cup competitions and most importantly were dumped out of the Champions League by Manchester United in embarrassing style, blowing a 2-0 first-leg lead to go out on away goals following a controversial last-gasp penalty.
Buffon made a crucial error that helped United achieve their remarkable comeback, spilling Marcus Rashford's weak shot into the path of Romelu Lukaku to allow the Belgian to score the away side's second and set up a dramatic finish.

Reds must be at 'full throttle'

Reds must be at 'full throttle'

LONDON • Anfield is made for special European nights like this and Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson is confident his team will rise to the occasion when they host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash tomorrow.
After returning to form with a 3-0 Premier League win against Bournemouth on Feb 9, the Reds jetted off to Marbella, Spain, for a four-day warm-weather training camp.
Left-back Robertson is adamant that the squad are now rejuvenated and ready for a crucial run of matches. After the Bayern game, the Reds travel to Old Trafford to tackle Manchester United in a crucial league fixture.
"Two massive games. When we landed in Marbella on Monday, our full focus was on the Bayern Munich game," Robertson told the club's official website.
"We need to be at full throttle for that game. They are such a good team and they have been the last six or seven years so we know what a tough task it will be.
"But we believe we can cause any teams problems and we have to be at our best."
Liverpool are undefeated at Anfield in European competitions since 2014, and Robertson believes the home support will be decisive.
"Everyone knows how special nights here are in the Champions League," said the 24-year-old Scotland international.
"We feed off each other. Players feed off the fans and the fans feed off the players because it's up to us to get them to have something to shout about.
"But it also helps when they're getting behind us and it can maybe give you that extra percentage in the game. That's what home fans are for."
Influential centre-back Virgil van Dijk is suspended for the first leg and the Reds' defensive situation is further complicated by injuries to Joe Gomez (fractured leg) and Dejan Lovren (hamstring).
This means that manager Jurgen Klopp could deploy Brazilian midfielder Fabinho alongside Joel Matip against the Bundesliga champions.
Former Liverpool centre-back Sami Hyypia is confident that the Reds can cope without van Dijk and expects other players to fill the void.
"It is very difficult to find a weakness. He is an ultimate centre-back and it would be a pleasure to play alongside him. He is so good," Hyypia said of the £75 million (S$131 million) arrival in January last year.
"These kinds of things (his suspension) give other players an opportunity to shine and take responsibility, and I hope the ones who play step up and do their job properly."
After an indifferent start to the Bundesliga season, Bayern are now just two points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund after a 3-2 win over Augsburg on Saturday but they have played a game more.
Hyypia warned the Reds that it would be wrong to discount the five-time European champions who last won the Champions League in 2013.
"When the draw was made, everyone was saying that Bayern were not the Bayern of old, but they are a very dangerous team," said the Finn. "Liverpool can't underestimate them. They need to respect them, analyse their weaknesses and then strike.
"I think one of their weaknesses is defending against the counter-attack, and Liverpool are not bad in that area. I think that can cause problems for them."

SINGAPORE - Former Hougang United head coach Philippe Aw was named head coach of the national Under-15 football team, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced on Thursday (Nov 17).
The announcement comes five days after The Straits Times reported that the national football body is shutting down its elite FAS Football Academy (FFA) programme - which began in 2000 and was then called the National Football Academy - with players to continue their development at the various Singapore Premier League clubs.
Aw will lead his team at the Asean Football Federation (AFF) U-15 Championship in Thailand from July 27 to Aug 9, where the Cubs will face Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and Philippines in Group A.
The 41-year-old will also guide the team in qualification matches for the 2020 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championships later this year.
"I'm happy to be able to play a key role in developing the next generation of players by working closely with the clubs and schools," said Aw.
"One of my tasks will be to scout for promising players for the U-15 national team from the schools, clubs and academies as we implement a revolving door policy for the age-group national teams with the discontinuation of the FFA.
"It's a job with big responsibilities and I will guide the players well so they can progress to the top. I look to instil discipline, commitment and hard work in the boys which are values they will carry throughout their lives."
Former national striker Fadzuhasny Juraimi, meanwhile, will lead the national U-18 team, who also have AFF and AFC tournaments this year.
The AFF U-18 Championship will take place in Vietnam from Aug 5 to 18, where Singapore are grouped with Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Australia. There are also qualifiers for the 2020 AFC U-19 Championship later in the year .
"This year will be an important one for the players to see how they have progressed so far," said the 39-year-old Fadzuhasny, who coached the FFA U-17 squad last year.
"The two competitions will be tough but I'm sure the boys will be looking forward to it.
"The upcoming months will be crucial in terms of preparation, and clubs and schools play an even more important role now given the decentralisation of youth development."

Football: Manchester United not 'satisfied' despite winning run, says David de Gea

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United's perfect record under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought renewed hope to the club but qualifying for the Champions League will still be 'difficult', goalkeeper David de Gea has said.
Sixth-placed United have won all six league games since the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea from 11 points to three, but they are still 16 points behind league leaders Liverpool who have 60 points.
"We're happy with the wins but we aren't satisfied with the overall situation. This is a club that should be fighting for the title," de Gea told Sky Sports.
"We want to get back into the Champions League places, which will be a difficult objective, but we have managed to reduce the points deficit quite a bit."
After advancing to the fifth round of the FA Cup at Arsenal's expense, United next host Burnley in the league on Tuesday (Jan 29) and de Gea is wary of their opponents who have won 10 points from their last four games.
"They're on a good run of results but we're playing at home, and we're also on a good run of form, so we're fully confident of winning all three points," the Spaniard added.
"They are dangerous and we know the kind of style they will use against us. They like to put you under pressure with long balls, and they're very dangerous at set-pieces."
United last beat Burnley at home in 2015 with the visitors earning a draw in the last two league matches at Old Trafford.

Klopp can shuffle pack at the back despite injuries

Klopp can shuffle pack at the back despite injuries

LONDON • While an untimely series of injuries has left Jurgen Klopp short-handed at the back, the Liverpool manager knows in Fabinho, he has a player as comfortable in defence as he is in midfield.
Trent Alexander-Arnold joined a growing casualty list after suffering a knee injury during last weekend's 1-0 win at Brighton, and could be out for up to a month. The decision to loan Nathaniel Clyne to Bournemouth for the season has been questioned, with Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren still working their way back to fitness.
But, while Joel Matip is expected to be back in the squad for today's Premier League game at home to Crystal Palace since fracturing his collarbone during their Champions League win over Napoli on Dec 11, Klopp can afford to resist throwing him into the fray given Fabinho's "defensive brain".
It has taken the Brazil midfielder, signed in the summer for £39 million (S$68.4 million), time to adapt to English football. He made his league debut only in October, but Klopp never had any doubts the "brilliant player" would become a vital cog as Liverpool chase their first league title in 29 years.
The German said: "To have a good footballer in that position when you have the ball is great. He can play in a lot of positions."
The 25-year-old, who was instrumental alongside Virgil van Dijk in defence as the Reds kept a 13th clean sheet in 22 league games at the Amex Stadium to maintain a four-point cushion over champions Manchester City, also saw his switch to "centre-back coming".
He told the club website: "Some weeks ago, I knew this could be an option because we had some players injured. I had some training sessions playing in that position, which helped me adapt better and pick up aspects like positioning and movements."
Another player who will have a key role in helping the table-toppers maintain the league's best defensive record - only 10 goals conceded - against Roy Hodgson's men is left-back Andy Robertson.
The Scotland captain was rewarded on Thursday with a new contract until 2024, after a string of fine performances to cement his starting position in the team.
Klopp said the 24-year-old, who "screams Liverpool", put pen to paper "in almost record time", and Robertson revealed the decision was a "no-brainer".
He said: "I want to stay. As soon as they put an offer on the table, it was signed as quickly as that."

Champs may need 105 pts: Klopp

LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has warned his players that they may need as many as 105 points to beat Manchester City to the English Premier League title this season.
City won the title last campaign with a record 100 points, but such has been the pace at the top this term that the German believes even more might be needed this time.
Speaking after the Reds beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on Friday to ensure they will spend Christmas Day on top of the table, he said: "Everybody asks me about the situation, first in the table and all that stuff and that the last four times a team was first in the table at Christmas they won the league.
"So far it looks like a really special season, 48 points before Christmas is crazy.
"But there are other teams. Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, they will probably win (this weekend), then they will have 40-something points, nobody is dropping points...
"You will probably need 105 to be champions, you don't know. We cannot start a party."
City remained on 44 points after being shocked 3-2 at home by Crystal Palace yesterday.

Jurgen Klopp has now defeated all 32 British clubs he has faced as Liverpool manager in all competitions. Before Friday, Wolves were the only side he failed to beat, losing in the FA Cup in January last year in their only previous meeting.

Mohamed Salah's 11th Premier League goal of the season and Virgil van Dijk's first for the club since he scored on his debut against Everton helped to secure a seventh successive league victory.
Liverpool have now played 18 matches and remain the only unbeaten side in the league.
To get to 105 points, they can afford to lose only one of their remaining 20 games and they must also clinch 19 victories.
Klopp was particularly pleased with the professional way in which his team overcame a Wolves side that have a good record (W1 D3 L2) against top-six opponents this season.
"It was very mature," he said. "The heavy rain made things very hard.
"Both goals had nothing to do with the things we did in the game but we were quick in the mind in two set pieces."
Salah's opening goal was brilliantly converted with the outside of his left boot and he also set up the second for van Dijk, who was outstanding at the back for Liverpool.
"He is in a good moment and very important for us and hopefully it can stay like this," said Klopp, when asked about van Dijk's form and influence on the team.
"The work rate in general is outstanding with how we defended. I love the boy but the two in front (Jordan Henderson and Fabinho) have to run a lot more to make it easier for the centre-halves and they did it again."
With van Dijk anchoring the rock-solid defence, Liverpool have conceded only seven times in the league this season - the fewest of all teams.
"I'm more happy that I'm keeping clean sheets with my team and winning games," the Dutchman said on the club website.
"Obviously scoring a goal is a bonus and obviously a very proud moment and hopefully there's more to come, but I'm more focused on winning games."
THE GUARDIAN, REUTERS

Football: Vardy strikes as Leicester stun Chelsea

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea suffered their first home defeat since April as Jamie Vardy fired Leicester to a shock 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (Dec 22).
Maurizio Sarri's side paid the price for failing to convert their chances when Vardy netted early in the second half to hand the Blues their first defeat in five games.
Chelsea's disjointed display surrendered an 18-match unbeaten run at the Bridge dating back to Tottenham's victory in April.
Sarri has insisted he does not expect Chelsea to challenge for the title this season, the Italian rating Liverpool and Manchester City as "two steps ahead" of the Blues.
This was further evidence to support Sarri's concerns, with Chelsea left trailing 11 points behind leaders Liverpool.
Chelsea remain in fourth place in the Premier League, but they are now above fifth-placed Arsenal only on goal difference, leaving them facing a tense bid to qualify for the Champions League in the second half of the season.
Leicester's first win at Chelsea since September 2000 was well-timed for Foxes boss Claude Puel, who has endured recent reports he could be sacked just 14 months after he arrived from Southampton.
Chelsea almost took the lead in bizarre fashion after just two minutes when David Luiz launched a long ball towards Willian.
Luiz's pass bounced on the edge of the Leicester area, prompting Foxes keeper Kasper Schmeichel to rush off his line, but when neither he or Willian could make contact, the ball bounced just wide of the empty net.
Pedro was inches away from putting Chelsea in front when he met Willian's corner with a glancing header that flashed wide as Luiz stretched in vain to turn it in.
But despite their territorial dominance, Chelsea's passing and movement wasn't precise or fast enough to prise Leicester open.
THUNDEROUS
Significantly, Hazard was again deployed up front as Sarri continued with the experiment of using the Belgian playmaker as a 'false nine'.
Hazard has been less than effusive in his thoughts about the role so far, dropping hints that he would prefer to return to his usual wide position.
He remains by far Chelsea's most dangerous player wherever he lines up, but there is little doubt his best performances come on the flanks.
Hazard had been the midweek League Cup match-winner against Bournemouth and he should have bagged his 100th Chelsea goal after pouncing on a slip from Leicester's Harry Maguire for a fierce close-range shot that cannoned off the bar.
It was a crucial moment.
Ndidi's thunderous long-range drive forced Kepa Arrizabalaga to make a fine save before Jorginho produced a powerful effort of his own that Schmeichel punched away.
Not for the first time this season, Chelsea's miscues in attack proved fatal.
Showing the cutting edge that Sarri's team lacked, Leicester punished a moment's loss of concentration to snatch the lead in the 51st minute.
James Maddison slipped a perfect pass to Vardy, who escaped Cesar Azpilicueta before burying a cool finish past Kepa for his sixth goal of the season.
It was the first time Chelsea had conceded a goal at home in six matches and inevitably they turned to Hazard for inspiration.
Beating Leicester's offside trap, Hazard cut in from the left for a stinging strike that Schmeichel blocked at his near post.
Sarri responded by sending on Olivier Giroud and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, allowing Hazard to return to the left wing.
But Leicester were defending superbly and Chelsea's luck was out in stoppage-time when Marcos Alonso's shot hit a post and rolled along the goalline to safety.
