Football: 'We want Messi to always be at Barca', says club president Bartomeu

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has said he plans to offer Lionel Messi a new contract in the hope the Argentinian will stay at the club his whole career.
Messi's current deal runs until 2021, the same year he turns 34, but the Argentinian has been in brilliant form again this season.
He has 42 goals for club and country while his 32 scored in La Liga have propelled Barca to within touching distance of their fourth league title in five years.
"We would like to renew his contract, that's the idea," Bartomeu told ESPN in an interview published on Friday (April 5).
"I believe he still has many years in front of him and in the coming months we will sit down with him so that he has many more years at Barcelona."
Messi joined Barcelona's academy aged 13 and is one of the few players left from Pep Guardiola's iconic team that won the treble in 2009.
In total, he has won nine La Liga titles with the club, as well as four in the Champions League and six in the Copa del Rey.
"Messi is a one-club man," Bartomeu added. "It's more than what he does on the pitch, his relationship with Barca will last forever.
"I use the example of Pele, who was always at Santos. We want Messi to always be at Barca, whether that's playing on the pitch or being linked to the club (after he retires)."

Football: United late show rescues draw against Burnley

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's winning start as Manchester United's caretaker manager ended with a 2-2 draw at home to Burnley on Tuesday (Jan 29), but his side avoided defeat in spirited fashion with two late goals.
Goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood had given Burnley a 2-0 lead before a late rally from United with a penalty from Paul Pogba in the 87th minute and a stoppage-time goal from Victor Lindelof saved their blushes.
Solskjaer had won his opening six Premier League games after replacing Jose Mourinho in December and the result means United missed out on a chance to go level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
Burnley, who are now unbeaten in five and move up to 15th, went ahead in the 51st minute when Ashley Barnes blasted home after being put through by Jack Cork.
The Clarets doubled their lead in the 81st minute when Chris Wood headed in a cross from Ashley Westwood at the back post.
But United got a foothold when Jesse Lingard was pulled down by Jeff Hendrick and Pogba drove home the penalty.
In the second minute of stoppage time Burnley keeper Tom Heaton parried an Alexis Sanchez header but Lindelof reacted well to fire in the equaliser.

Football: Liverpool ease past Bayern 3-1 to reach Champions League last eight

MUNICH, Germany (REUTERS) - Sadio Mane scored twice to hand Liverpool a 3-1 victory at Bayern Munich on Wednesday (March 13) with a dominant performance that sent them through to the Champions League quarter-finals.
After the last-16 first leg ended goalless at Anfield, five-times European champions Liverpool took control in Munich, bossing the game and nullifying their German opponents to become the fourth English team into the last eight.
In-form Mane pounced on a needless charge out of his goal by Manuel Neuer in his 100th Champions League appearance, to round the Bayern keeper with a superb turn before chipping his finish into the empty net in the 26th minute.
The German champions levelled 13 minutes later against the run of play when winger Serge Gnabry beat his marker and his cutback was turned into the goal by Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
Centre back Virgil van Dijk, who had missed the first leg last month, killed off any German hopes of a comeback when he rose high to head home in the 69th minute before Mane headed in his second in the 84th.
Last season's runners-up Liverpool completed a full house of English teams in the last eight, the first time this has happened since the 2008/9 season, with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City already through.
Bayern knew they had to be more adventurous than they had been at Anfield, but they were suffocated by Liverpool's intense pressing in the first half.
The Reds, beaten by Real Madrid in last season's final, suffered an early blow when captain Jordan Henderson hobbled off with an ankle injury.
Mane's goal gave them the edge but instead adding to their lead when they had the upper hand, Matip's own goal let Bayern back into the game against the run of play.
The Bavarians, who had reached the Champions League quarter-finals or better in each of the last seven seasons, needed a second with Liverpool heading through on the away goals rule.
Liverpool, however, kept up the pressure and were rewarded when Dutchman Van Dijk grabbed his third goal in his last four appearances in all competitions.
Mane completed a memorable win with a well-timed header after a delightful lofted pass from Mohamed Salah as Liverpool stretched their unbeaten run in Champions League last-16 matches to eight games following a 1-0 loss at home to Barcelona in the 2006/07.

Solskjaer trusts De Gea

Solskjaer trusts De Gea

LONDON • David de Gea is going through a bad run but, if anyone at Manchester United has earned the right to be forgiven for a few dodgy games, then it is the Spanish goalkeeper - at least in the eyes of his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer insisted, ahead of tomorrow's home game against Chelsea, that he will not be dropping the goalkeeper, who was culpable for both Manchester City goals in Wednesday's 2-0 Premier League defeat.
When asked if he might replace the No. 1 with Sergio Romero, he said: "No. Not at all. Because I trust David and he's for me the best player United have had for the last six or seven years. Going through tough patches is part of a footballer's career and David will be fine."
De Gea came under intense scrutiny in his first season after he moved from Atletico Madrid in 2011 as a 20-year-old, but he has since proved his quality, featuring in the PFA Team of the Year in five of the six seasons between 2012 and 2018.
He is yet to agree a new deal on terms that expire in summer next year. But Solskjaer does not believe this distraction, regardless of whether he stays or leaves, is the reason for the shaky displays of the 28-year-old, who also let a shot slip under him in the 3-0 loss at Barcelona in their Champions League quarter-final exit.
"That's something you have to deal with as a footballer," the Norwegian said. "It's a situation (that can be normal). David's coming in every single day and doing what he should be doing."

Former United goalkeeper Gary Bailey, 60, who played for the club from 1978 to 1987, believes that No. 2 Romero should start tomorrow.
"De Gea has been an absolutely amazing 'keeper for United," he tweeted. "But perhaps it's time now to give him a rest and let him rediscover his mojo. We have a more than capable replacement in Argentinian international Sergio Romero."
Despite a seventh defeat in nine games in all competitions, Solskjaer has chosen to keep faith with his underperforming star players like de Gea, and Paul Pogba as well.
He believes that the France midfielder will still be at Old Trafford next season, although he admitted there can be no guarantees.
Pogba's future is unclear, with The Guardian understanding he will consider departing if United do not qualify for the Champions League, with Real Madrid his likely destination.
Solskjaer said: "You can't guarantee anything in football but, yes, I think Paul's going to be here. He's very determined to succeed at United."
He understands how Pogba can be a lightning rod for the Red Devils - singled out for praise when winning, criticised for being off-form when losing.
He added: "That's just the standards he sets because he's creating chances, scoring goals, doing loads of work. Everyone looks to Paul (when we lose), could you have done better? But he's done fantastic for us, he's a human being as well."
He also confirmed that midfielder Ander Herrera, reported to be leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, could be involved tomorrow following injury.
Sixth-placed United (64 points) are still in the running for a top-four spot, though they trail Chelsea, in fourth, by three points with three matches to go.

Football: AC Milan's Higuain poised for Chelsea move - report

MILAN (AFP) - AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain has "agreed terms" and is set for an imminent move to Premier League club Chelsea, Italian sports daily Gazzetta Dello Sport reported on Wednesday (Jan 9).
Higuain joined Milan on a season-long loan from Juventus in July with an option to buy but has struggled to settle at the San Siro, scoring eight goals in all competitions.
And the 31-year-old Argentina international wants to join former Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri at the English club which would take over his 36 million euro (S$55.9 million) buy-out clause.
"Chelsea have an agreement with Higuain to take him immediately," Gazzetta reported.
Higuain had his most successful season under Sarri, breaking the Serie A goalscoring record with 36 goals in the 2015/16 campaign.
He scored 91 goals during his three years at the club before moving to Juventus in 2016 on a 90 million euro deal.
He previously spent six years at Real Madrid before starting his career at River Plate in Argentina.
Higuain had been hampered by a back injury earlier in the season but broke his two-month goal-scoring drought before the winter break.
Milan's sporting director Leonardo however warned on Tuesday he had to get down to work.
"He had a tough moment, he has to put it behind him and get to work," said Leonardo.
"A goal can change things, but if he is to continue here, he needs to take on responsibility." Brazilian Leonardo added: "There's no point following rumours and gossip.
"He is here right now. Seeing as he is here, he needs to get down and actually do something for this team."

Football: Arsenal's Ramsey set to cash in with Juventus move, reports say

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is set to seal a money-spinning move to Italian champions Juventus when his contract expires with the Gunners in the summer, according to reports on Thursday (Jan 10).
The Welsh international will bring an end to 10 years at Arsenal at the end of the season after talks over a new deal broke down with the Premier League giants in September.
According to The Guardian, Ramsey will become Juventus' second-highest earner behind Cristiano Ronaldo by signing a five-year deal worth £140,000 (S$240,000) a week (£7.2m a season).
Ramsey, 28, is already free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs and had been courted by a number of big names with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan also reportedly interested.
Having joined from his hometown club Cardiff City for £4.8 million in 2008, Ramsey has scored 62 goals in 354 appearances for Arsenal and won the FA Cup in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
Despite making clear his future lies away from the Emirates, Ramsey has continued to play a big part in Unai Emery's first season in charge of Arsenal, scoring three goals in 25 appearances.
And Emery insisted on Thursday that he will still count on Ramsey for the rest of the season even if he does finalise a deal with Juventus.
"My idea and focus, I say to him every day, is that we need his performance for us," said Emery.
"In the last match I was very happy with him. I asked in the last match at Blackpool if he is OK to help us play and he said, 'Yeah, coach, I want to play' and he played with a very big behaviour and commitment to us.
"After, his future belongs to him, his family and agent. Every day he's here with us, he's working very well. I want his behaviour and his focus to be on West Ham on Saturday."
Emery also revealed that Arsenal can only afford to make loan additions in January as they aim to end a two-year absence from the Champions League.
"We cannot sign permanently. We can only loan players," said Emery.
Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez, who Emery had on loan during his time at Sevilla, has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates.
"I don't know how his situation is but I know the club is working for the possibility of players who can help us with this condition (on loan)."
Arsenal sit fifth in the Premier League, just three points off the top four, and are also into the last 32 of the Europa League and FA Cup.

Football: Man City surge clear through Sterling as Spurs suffer

LONDON (REUTERS) - Raheem Sterling's hat-trick in Manchester City's 3-1 win over Watford lifted the champions four points clear at the top of the Premier League after Tottenham Hotspur's challenge faltered again with a 2-1 loss at Southampton on Saturday (March 9).
On a landmark day for England strikers, with Harry Kane scoring his 200th goal for clubs and country in Spurs' defeat and Jamie Vardy notching his 100th and 101st for Leicester City in their 3-1 win over Fulham, Sterling took pride of place.
City, still on course to lift four different trophies, took advantage of Sterling being awarded a contentious goal just after halftime before he struck a minute later and completed his treble in the space of 13 minutes.
Gerard Deulofeu pulled one back within 17 seconds of being brought on as a substitute but Pep Guardiola's men never looked threatened as they moved on to 74 points from 30 games, four clear of Liverpool, who host Burnley on Sunday.
Sterling's opening goal following a goalless first half was awarded after originally being ruled out for offside.
A long discussion between referee Paul Tierney and his assistant saw the decision reversed with Sterling ruled to have been played onside by Watford's Daryl Janmaat, whose challenge saw the ball ricochet off the striker's leg into the net.
Yet if the opener was debatable, there was no argument about the other two as Sterling made it 15 league goals for the season.
"It's a massive win," Sterling told the BBC. "In my head, I am hoping and praying (that the first goal would be awarded). I was hoping my goal didn't get cancelled out. We got it and it kickstarted our game."
England captain Kane's first-half milestone was eclipsed as third-placed Spurs squandered a lead in a game they were dominating, prompting criticism of his players by manager Mauricio Pochettino.
On an unhappy return to his old St Mary's stamping ground, Pochettino, serving the first of a two-match touchline ban, could hardly credit how his side capitulated to two late goals in five minutes from Yan Valery and James Ward-Prowse.
Now without a win in their last four league games, it left the Argentine fuming.
"It is difficult to understand why we changed so much from the first half to the second. We did not take the second half seriously," Pochettino said.
Ward-Prowse's stunning free-kick winner left Spurs on 61 points, 13 behind Man City and nine adrift of Liverpool.

TOP-FOUR BATTLE

The win also dented Spurs' hopes in an ever-tighter top-four battle for Champions League places as they remain just three points ahead of nearest pursuers Manchester United, who play at fifth-placed Arsenal on Sunday.
Southampton's late turnaround earned them crucial points in the fight to avoid relegation, just as Cardiff City were able to celebrate an equally important 2-0 win over West Ham United thanks to goals from Junior Hoilett and Victor Camarasa.
Fellow strugglers Brighton & Hove Albion also had reason to cheer as a dazzling individual goal from Anthony Knockaert sealed their 2-1 win at fierce rivals Crystal Palace.
Cardiff's win was not enough to take the 18th-placed side out of the bottom three but they are only two points behind Burnley and Southampton (30 points) while Brighton joined Palace on 33.
Newcastle United pushed clear of the struggling pack into 13th place with an astonishing comeback from two down at halftime to beat Everton 3-2, with a goal from Salomon Rondon and a late double from Ayoze Perez, that earned them a fifth straight league win at St James' Park.
There seems, however, no hope for Fulham under caretaker manager Scott Parker, after their defeat at Leicester, whose own new boss Brendan Rodgers was grateful for Vardy's late double.
The brace ensured the England striker became the first player to achieve a three-figure tally of goals for the Foxes since Gary Lineker.
Fulham are in 19th place on 17 points with their plight only topped by Huddersfield Town's after the Terriers remained three points further adrift following their 2-0 home defeat by Bournemouth.

Football: Ronaldo hat-trick sends Portugal into Nations League final

PORTO, Portugal (REUTERS) - Evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick, including two late goals, to give Portugal a 3-1 win over Switzerland in a Nations League semi-final featuring an extraordinary VAR incident on Wednesday (June 5).
Ronaldo blasted Portugal ahead from a free kick in the 25th minute, his first goal for his country for nearly a year, but the Swiss equalised with a penalty after halftime which will raise more questions over the use of the VAR system.
After a largely anonymous second half, Ronaldo suddenly sprang to life to by scoring twice in the last three minutes to complete the 53rd hat-trick of his career and the seventh for his country, showing that even at 34 he is always a threat.
His goals - his first for his country since last year's World Cup in Russia - rescued Portugal after the Swiss had dominated for the final half hour and threatened to snatch a shock win.
"There's no adjective to describe him," said Portugal coach Fernando Santos.
"He's a genius. You can be a genius in art, and in sculpture and he is a football genius."
"It was an intense match, very hard-fought, against a very well-organised Swiss team," he added.
Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic was left to rue a missed opportunity.
"We had the chance to get a second but didn't take it. We got outnumbered at the back and conceded. Their top player made the difference," he said.
Switzerland created some early openings while Ronaldo missed a good early chance for Portugal when he dragged his shot wide after the Swiss gave away possession in defence.
But there was no mistake in the 25th minute when he went down under a challenge from Kevin Mbabu on the edge of the area, got up and sent his free kick fizzing past a wrong-footed Sommer and into the net.
Switzerland got back into the match in extraordinary circumstances after halftime Swiss midfielder Steven Zuber went down under a challenge from Nelson Semedo as he ran onto Xherdan Shaqiri's through ball and appealed for a penalty but play continued.
Portugal then went straight down the other end and were awarded a penalty for a foul on Silva.
The referee, after consulting the video assistant, then decided to review the Swiss incident on the pitchside monitor and awarded them the spot kick.
The incident seemed to unsettle Portugal and the Swiss took control with Shaqiri, looking to make an impression after getting limited playing time for Liverpool this season, at the centre of their best moves.
Steven Zuber and Haris Seferovic both missed chances and the Swiss were then destroyed by Ronaldo at his most deadly Bernardo Silva produced a low cross from the right and Ronaldo swept the ball home with his first touch to rescue his side in the 88th minute.
Two minutes later, he collected the ball on the counter-attack, twisted past his marker and curled the ball into the far corner for his 88th international goal in 157 appearances.

Football: Tottenham overcome Leicester challenge to stay in title hunt

Football: Tottenham overcome Leicester challenge to stay in title hunt

(REUTERS) - Goals from Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min helped Tottenham Hotspur overcome Leicester City 3-1 in an entertaining Premier League match at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (Feb 10).
Tottenham went ahead through Sanchez who scored his first goal for the London club by meeting Eriksen’s whipped cross with a diving header in the 33rd minute, although Leicester’s players complained he was in an offside position.
Leicester missed the chance to equalise on the hour mark when substitute Jamie Vardy’s penalty – his first touch after coming on – was pushed away by Hugo Lloris after Jan Vertonghen was adjudged to have fouled James Maddison in the box.
“Lloris saved us a few times and we were lucky that he took out the penalty which gave us confidence. You felt that in the whole stadium, and we’re happy to have Hugo,” Eriksen said.
Tottenham doubled their lead three minutes later as Eriksen collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a fierce shot past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.  Vardy made up for his earlier miss by tapping in from close range 14 minutes from the final whistle after a well worked move allowed Ricardo Pereira to drill in a cross from the right.
After a sustained period of Leicester pressure, Son settled nerves of the home supporters by slotting in Tottenham’s third with a solo run from the halfway line.  Victory took title contenders Tottenham to 60 points from 26 matches, five points behind leaders Liverpool and two adrift of champions Manchester City who play Chelsea later on Sunday.
Eriksen said Tottenham had showed plenty of character to see off a determined Leicester, a quality that could help them in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg clash against Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund.
“We didn’t make life easy for ourselves,” the Dane said. “The last three games we won in the last 10 minutes, which shows the character of the team and we did that again today. It’s going to be the same on Wednesday.”
Tottenham had a first-half penalty claim denied after Harry Maguire appeared to bring down Son with the referee booking the South Korean for simulation, a decision manager Mauricio Pochettino described as “unbelievable”.
“When you compare the situation with the penalty for Leicester, unbelievable... I’m more relaxed because we won,” Pochettino added.  “Do you think that we’re a team trying to cheat a referee? Come on, we’re one of the nicest teams on the pitch.”
Leicester boss Claude Puel bemoaned his side’s finishing.
“Throughout the game we had a feeling we can score... we had chances and half chances,” the Frenchman said. “It’s difficult to accept with all the good intention to go without the reward.
“We need a little more conviction and a clinical edge.”
