Chinese football aims to be top in Asia
SHANGHAI • China wants its domestic league to be the best in Asia and No. 6 in the world as the country ramps up its ambitions to become a major men's footballing power by 2050.
Li Yuyi, the Chinese Super League (CSL) chairman, told Xinhua news agency that a better league is a priority and hopes that it will ultimately benefit the national side.
The league has made headlines in recent years by luring big-name players and coaches from Europe with hefty salaries.
Chinese players, though, have yet to make an impact with the national team 74th in the Fifa rankings and only Wu Lei, the Espanyol forward, playing regularly in a major European league.
But the Chinese Football Association (CFA) and President Xi Jinping, a big football fan, have big plans and want to host - and one day win - the World Cup.
Said Li, who is also CFA vice-president: "We will work hard to develop our league to be the top in Asia and No. 6 in the world.
"It is a general rule that if a team had a good result in the World Cup, it always had many players (who) played in the world-leading professional leagues."
The CSL had average crowds of 24,000 last year, according to Xinhua, making it the sixth-best supported after the English Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga, Spain's LaLiga, Italy's Serie A and Mexico's Liga MX.
Under Xi, China launched a football development plan in 2015 that aims to get hundreds of millions of children into the sport.
The government will this year begin a pilot scheme introducing football to kindergartens across the country.

Football: Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino ruled out of Barcelona game

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Liverpool will be without forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino when they face Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final as they look to overturn a 3-0 deficit, manager Jurgen Klopp said on Monday (May 6).
Egypt international Salah was carried off the pitch with a head injury in Saturday's 3-2 Premier League win at Newcastle United and has not recovered for the game against Barca at Anfield on Tuesday.
Brazilian Firmino has a muscular injury and was not included in the squad for Saturday's game at St James' Park.
"They both are not available for tomorrow," Klopp told a news conference.
"Two of the world's best strikers are not available and we have to score four goals to go through in 90 minutes.
"It doesn't make life easier but as long as we have 11 players on the pitch we will try... if we can do it wonderful and if not, fail in the most beautiful way."
Salah is expected to feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Liverpool's final Premier League game of the season on Sunday but Klopp said the clash with Barcelona was too soon for the 26-year-old.
"It's a concussion for Mo. He would not be allowed to play. He feels Ok but it's not good enough from a medical point of view. He's desperate but we cannot do it," Klopp added.
"Together with our supporters this was a long season and there's a little chance to make it even longer. If not, these are the last two home games of an incredible season.
"We should celebrate it with a good performance on the pitch and in the stands."
Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold said Liverpool would have to be fearless to have a chance of progressing.
"That's the only way we're going to get a result. If we get caught up in fearing their players then that's not really going to work," Alexander-Arnold added.
"We have had decent results this season where we have scored more than three goals and being at home helps us. There's still that sense of belief but we know it's going to be hard. But anything is possible, especially at Anfield."

Football: De Gea produces masterclass as Man United beat Tottenham

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United proved on Sunday (Jan 13) that their recovery under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is no flash in the pan, with Marcus Rashford pouncing to seal a 1-0 win in a thrilling contest against Tottenham.
The two sides went toe-to-toe in an open game but while both teams had multiple chances, United goalkeeper David de Gea proved the difference, making a string of phenomenal saves.
Interim manager Solskjaer has installed Rashford as his number one striker and was richly rewarded when the 21-year-old scored the decisive goal in the 44th minute.
Paul Pogba sparkled for United, engaged in a personal duel with Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for periods of the second half.
United's victory is their fifth successive Premier League win under their temporary manager in a contest seen as his first major test since he took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho last month.
Earlier, Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham settled quickly into their fluid passing game at Wembley, enjoying the bulk of possession.
They went close to taking the lead when Harry Winks, seemingly unsure whether to shoot or cross, fired the ball across the face of the United goal after being played in by Son Heung-min.
Minutes later the visitors had a chance to take the lead when Ashley Young's cross fell to Jesse Lingard, who fired over from the corner of the six-yard box.
United, with Lingard, Anthony Martial and Rashford racing forward at every opportunity, looked dangerous and Martial forced Lloris into a smart low save with his legs.
The game lost a little of its frantic intensity midway through the first half.
Kane poked the ball into the net after being set up by Dele Alli but it was ruled out for offside.
Moussa Sissoko pulled up sharply with an apparent hamstring injury and although he returned to the pitch he was unable to continue, being replaced by Erik Lamela.
The decisive moment in the match came shortly before half-time.

Rashford strikes

Lingard cut out a careless cross-field ball from Kieran Trippier and nudged the ball to Pogba, who had time to look up and measure a raking cross-field pass to Rashford, racing down the right.
Rashford still had plenty to do but kept his nerve to fire right-footed past Lloris and into the far corner - Lloris got fingertips to the ball but was unable to keep it out.
Pogba, whose relationship with Mourinho had deteriorated sharply, looks rejuvenated under Solskjaer - he has been involved in eight goals under the interim boss, with four goals and four assists.
Tottenham came out of the blocks smartly after the restart and Kane looked certain to level from close range but De Gea saved brilliantly with his left foot before pulling off a fine save to deny an Alli headed effort.
Ashley Young sent over an inviting cross that Pogba headed straight at Lloris and the Spurs goalkeeper had to be alert to tip over another Pogba effort that came at the end of a long spell of United possession.
Spurs, roared on by a passionate home crowd, were building up a head of steam and Alli had a golden chance to equalise but De Gea was again equal to the task, saving with his legs.
The Spaniard produced yet another stunning save to keep out Toby Alderweireld before flying to his right to cling on to a Kane free-kick.
Spurs had further chances in a frenetic ending but could find no way past De Gea.
The win lifts United to level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal and six behind Chelsea, currently in the fourth and final Champions League spot, but Spurs remain nine points behind leaders Liverpool.

Football: Spurs not changing transfer strategy despite injuries, says Pochettino

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino says the club will not change their transfer strategy despite potentially costly injuries to striker Harry Kane and midfielder Dele Alli but are open to making signings this month.
Both players have been ruled out until March - Kane with ankle ligament damage sustained in the recent loss to Manchester United and Alli with a hamstring strain suffered in the win at Fulham on Sunday.
Pochettino, who did not sign any players during the summer transfer window, reiterated that Spurs' transfer policy has not altered due to the injuries but says the club are "trying".
"It is so clear, I am so open to improve the squad and add a player if Harry Kane and Dele Alli are fit or not fit," he said.
"I was open in the summer and I am open now.
"The difficult thing is to find quality that will add to the squad. We are not going to change strategy, we are working, we will see what happens at the end."
Asked about Alli's injury, Pochettino said: "We need to be positive like with Harry Kane.
"We are going to miss him for a long period, it is the worst moment because we have a very busy fixture list ahead. It is a good opportunity for other players to step up."
Midfielder Moussa Sissoko has returned to training after suffering a groin problem against Manchester United but it is unclear whether he will feature in Thursday's (Jan 24) League Cup semi-final second leg at Chelsea.
Forward Lucas Moura is back in full training and should be fit to feature at Stamford Bridge following a knee injury.
Midfielder Victor Wanyama, who has been out since November with a knee problem, is also back in training but is unlikely to be involved.
"Sissoko and Lucas are in contention," Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday. "Wanyama we will see if it is possible for the weekend. It is very good news in the last few days."
Spurs, who are also without Son Heung-min, on Asian Cup duty with South Korea, take a 1-0 lead to Stamford Bridge after the first leg and are bidding for their first silverware since 2008.
The club, third in the Premier League, are battling for trophies on four fronts.

David Beckham celebrating after scoring the fifth goal in a 5-0 win over Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Sunday to mark the 20th anniversary of Manchester United’s famous treble in 1999.
The 44-year-old rolled back the years as he left a baffled Bayern defender on the floor with some neat footwork before smashing the ball into the roof of the net to the delight of a crowd in excess of 60,000.
Twenty years after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conjured up the last-gasp winner against Bayern in the 1999 Champions League final, the current United boss scored again against the German side that included Lothar Matthaus, Stefan Effenberg, Sammy Kuffour and Carsten Jancker from the 1999 starting line-up.
Dwight Yorke, Nicky Butt and Louis Saha also found the net as the charity match raised £1.5 million (S$2.62 million) for the Manchester United Foundation. Beckham took to Instagram to express his delight in seeing Alex Ferguson back at Old Trafford as manager for the day.
It was the first time Ferguson, 77, had been in a dugout since undergoing major surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage last May.
“Emotional to see the Boss back and to be on the same field with the players that we made history with… Incredible feeling,” Beckham wrote.
Ferguson was also happy to be back in action, telling BT Sport: “Making the effort to get here was the main thing. I had 27 years here, I can’t forget that. I think the impressive thing for me is they’ve all turned up. Some of them are in great condition, some are not, but they still came.”

Buffon calls on PSG to show 'spirit of sacrifice'

PARIS • So much has changed since the Champions League last-16 draw was made in December. Paris Saint-Germain were flying, Manchester United were in free fall and British pundits feared for the worst.
But it is PSG, and not the Red Devils, who will go into today's first leg with a sense of trepidation after arriving at Old Trafford with a decimated squad.
Two of their front three, Neymar and Edinson Cavani, have been ruled out through injuries, along with defender Thomas Meunier.
Their absences have thrown Thomas Tuchel's preparations into disarray, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon calling on his teammates to show "more of a spirit of sacrifice" to make up for the drop in quality.
Lamenting their weakened state, he told CNN: "This is a problem for us. I'm not sure if it's a big problem or a little one.
"I hope it's only a small problem but... it's going to be heavy going."
He also told Sky Sports: "Football is strange. Two months ago, all the people thought that PSG would have passed the test easily. Seeing what has happened to us and the evolution at Manchester today, at least we are even."
While his comments do not bode well against an in-form United, who are on a roll after 10 wins in 11 games, PSG do have a star player champing at the bit to prove a point against his former club.

BACKS AGAINST THE WALL
This is a problem for us. I'm not sure if it's a big problem or a little one. I hope it's only a small problem but... It's going to be heavy going.
GIANLUIGI BUFFON, Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, on the front-line injury crisis his team face for their Champions League game against Manchester United today.

Written off as a £60 million (S$105 million) flop, Angel di Maria, who lasted just one season at United from 2014-15, will have a vital role to play for the visitors.
According to a tweet from Manchester Evening News writer Samuel Luckhurst, the Argentina forward will line up alongside Kylian Mbappe and Julian Draxler as Tuchel rejigs his attacking trio.
In a recent interview with radio station France Bleu, di Maria lifted the lid on his inability to settle in England, saying: "I only stayed one year. It wasn't the best period of my career, or they didn't let me have my best time there. But thanks to God, I was able to come to PSG and be myself again."
If the French champions are to overcome their injury woes and put themselves in a strong position before the March 6 return leg at the Parc des Princes, they will certainly need him at his best.
Tuchel revealed that he is counting on di Maria to show his true self on the pitch, something that the United faithful only witnessed fleetingly. He said: "He is a gift for me. Everything is very easy with him because he is a top professional. He has extraordinary quality and works so hard."
It was also not all doom and gloom for the German boss after it was revealed Marco Verratti had won his fitness race following three weeks out with an ankle injury.
The Italy midfielder, who travelled with the squad, said he felt good and was really happy.

Football: Salah screamer gives Liverpool vital win against Chelsea

(REUTERS) - A spectacular strike from Mohamed Salah helped Liverpool maintain their two point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League title race with a crucial 2-0 win over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday (April 14).
City won 3-1 at Crystal Palace earlier on Sunday meaning Liverpool have 85 points with four games to go and City are on 83 with an additional match to play.
But with Pep Guardiola’s side having to face Tottenham and Manchester United in the next 10 days and Liverpool having no more matches against top six teams, Juergen Klopp’s side have a glorious chance to end their club’s 29-year wait for a domestic league title.
After a fascinatingly even first half, Liverpool turned on the style after the break with a 51st minute header from Sadio Mane and then a long-range screamer from Salah two minutes later blowing Chelsea away.
“I’m so proud of the team, it was a fantastic performance,” said Klopp.  “What a team, what a stadium, what an atmosphere. I’m so thankful I can be a part of this, it’s great. It’s just outstanding, very overwhelming at times,” said the German.
Although the brilliant Eden Hazard hit the post for the visitors, there was a real determination about the way Liverpool approached the second half – closing down across the field and yet still pushing forward in search of a third to totally kill the game.

BIGGEST OBSTACLE

That did not come but with only lowly Cardiff City, relegated Huddersfield Town, Newcastle United and Wolves remaining as hurdles, this was the biggest obstacle in Liverpool’s run in, cleared with some margin to spare.
Hazard, playing in a central role, had been a constant threat in the opening half while Liverpool’s cutting edge was not quite there. Mane went close with a curling effort and a Firmino toe poke forced Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga into action.
Chelsea had arguably had the better of the opening half but whatever Klopp said to his team at the break certainly had the desired effect.
The breakthrough came when Salah weaved into the area, putting the Chelsea defence on the back foot and Henderson picked out Mane at the back post with the Senegalese forward confidently heading home.
If that goal brought a feeling of relief, it was pure joy two minutes later when Salah scored a sensational second – the Egyptian receiving the ball on the right flank and cutting inside before unleashing an unstoppable drive from 25 metres out into the far, top corner.
“It blows me away,” said Klopp.  “I had the best view of it. I saw earlier than most people that it would go in. What a finish, what a shot. But the whole move around it. Wow, brilliant,” he added.
Chelsea responded positively, though, with David Luiz picking out Hazard with a ball over the top, the Belgian beating the advancing Alisson Becker only to see his shot bounce out off the post.
Moments later, Becker then had to be alert to keep out a Hazard shot from a Willian cross as Chelsea searched in vain for a way back.  But having been warned,
Liverpool were alert to the Hazard threat and they could have had a third themselves in the 89th minute with Mane forcing Arrizabalaga into a reflex save.  The jubilant reaction of the crowd at the final whistle, showed the importance of these three points.
The pressure is on City ahead of 10 days which could determine the outcome of this fascinating title race.
